17 Nov 09 Seize the Opportunity and the Job: The Interview

Having searched for jobs and job hunting advice on sites like www.jobvacancies.org you are ready to start preparing for any interviews you may secure.

The application form has been completed and the CV has been posted. You have been successful in securing that interview, but what is the next step. The interview stage is often where people feel most anxious and nervous when trying to secure their next job.The decision to hire or reject you for the job is made at the interview stage.

It is important that you do your very best at the interview stage, as this is the culmination of your hard work so far.If you have a bad interview then it is likely that all your efforts to secure the job have been in vain.

1. Make a Great Impression
You should be well dressed and immaculately presented. Make sure your clothing is appropriate for an interview.Even if you will not wear smart clothing in the position you are applying for, you should ensure you are dressed in business attire for the interview.

2. Make sure you are well researched.
One way to make a good impression is by appearing knowledgeable about the company you are applying to work for.Having a good understanding of the company should make the interview a little easier. So, if you are being interviewed for vacant Sainsburys jobs, do some research on how the company has developed. One question which is frequently asked is how do you see yourself fitting in to the company? If you know a thing or two about the company, you will find it a lot easier to answer this question.

3. Understand your body language.
Be aware that interviewers take note of your body language as they try and gain a clear picture of your personality. It would be abnormal to assume a different set of body language during the interview. What you should do is to take note of your body language so that at least it communicates openness and honesty.Don’t tell any untruths during an interview as these can usually be easily spotted.During an interview it is good to keep a nice level of eye contact with the interviewer, but don’t make it intimidating. Never fold your arms infront of your chest as this looks defensive.

4. Try and be confident.
Walk into the room with confidence and answer with the same level of confidence.Make sure you are confident in what you say.If you hit a snag and find yourself in a compromising situation, make sure you handle the situation confidently – even when saying that you do not know an answer to a question. If you answer with confidence then the employer will feel you are competent – possibly just the right person for the job.
