I was chatting with my little boy while he was visiting us this weekend. He was quizzing me about my work as I was busy at my laptop all hours of the day and night. He is aware that I run an Internet Business, Work From Home and do many Online Jobs, but he wished to be aware of just what I did. “Why are you always typing on your pc?”
He even used Skype messaging on his father’s laptop, to talk to me while I was working on.
I told him that for much of my time, I write editorials for clients. I explained that editorials are like stories. He asked what these editorials were discussing. I said that they could be about any subject, but had to take into consideration the concerns of my client at the same time. In the way of young kids, he said he could easily write stories about anything, pointed to his beanbag and said he could effortlessly write a tale about that!
Well, I do not like to be outdone by a 9 year old, so here goes, I will write a report about his beanbag.
Here I sit, on my stepson’s beanbag, while I Work From Home, writing editorials for customers to help in promoting their web sites. Although this beanbag can be comfortable for short periods, I am aware I will not be sitting here long, as I have a tendency to slip forward and onto the floor, making it rather tricky to concentrate on my Internet Business of search engine optimization (also known as seo).
The little polystyrene balls move to fit my back, which means that on condition that I do not want to change position I am ok, but the only way I can manage to get back up from the beanbag is to roll onto my knees and get up from there. I am certain there is a flair to getting off a beanbag in a dignified way which leaves one in one’s teens.
When I am not obtaining the beanbag for my Online Jobs, it joins the other two we own and they have many different uses, many of which I am positive were never the objective of their original maker. In our home they are used as very effective draught excluders, pushed up against our lounge door. They are also used in rough play between father and son – being picked up by the handle and used as a tool for swinging at each other – in a gentle fashion. They are also used as landing pads as he and his friends launch themselves from the sofa, moving the beanbag further and further away and looking to land in the middle of the beanbag.
This week he found a further new use, steps towards the ceiling, in order to endeavour to reach one of those sticky toys which had somehow managed to attach itself to our ceiling – one did not quite make him tall enough to reach the toy, but two (I could hardly bear to watch) worked just right. No bones were broken in the harum-scarum endeavour, so I think it could be considered a successful venture.
This report goes to show that if we listen to our kids we can be challenged to look at things in a new light and maybe even gain from the experience.
