I’ve been checking out lots of New careers recently, and one which quite often pops up is the role of a chef. As I’ve been looking into all of the Careers I’ve been looking at, I’ve also done research into this particular role. The following is mainly an expression of my personal opinions of what I feel it would take to become a chef, and ultimately if it’s a New career I should ever consider.
I’ll start off with the not so good points first – and with this specific role my main grumble would have to be with the working hours. Chefs can be needed at all hours – from working in the middle of the day at a busy seaside restaurant or cafe, or working during to the early hours at an exclusive city centre restaurant. The big money Careers for chefs orginate within the cities, where people can afford expensive fine dining. For me this would be an issue as I like to have my evenings and weekends free, but for individuals who aren’t particularly bothered by this, then it’s not such a big issue.
One of the ideas I liked about being chef as a New career is the amount of creativeness it affords people. Chefs normally take responsibility over their kitchens, choosing what goes on the menu, and what doesn’t. They can also be responsible for deciding what the dish of the day is, and in some instances they will even make up their own dishes to be sold at a restaurant. To me this degree of ingenuity and independence makes the job seem attractive – becoming a chef definitely looks like it would grant you a much higher degree of freedom compared to to your average 9 to 5 office job.
Another plus point, but for me this is a bad thing really – becoming a chef needs no recognised qualifications (with the exception of a hygiene certificate). You just need an enthusiasm for food, you must be a really good cook, and you must be determined to succeed. While I might have a love of food (well, a love of for chocolate!) and I am determined, one way or another, to achieve in life, I am not a very good cook at all. I have a penchant to burn or maim pretty much any food substance I come into contact with. I suppose with time I might conquer this and master the essentials, however I can see why this would divide me from the especially good chefs – the individuals who seem to have an affinity for the food, and how many spices will go nice in what dish, and things like that. These are the individuals who are really going to achieve in this role.
So for that exact reason I think I will continue my search for New careers. Becoming a chef definitely sounds like an interesting role though, and if had I been a better cook I may have contemplated it more seriously.
